This year, we had one of the most stressful events in many people's lives. We moved house just before Christmas! But it's not an ordinary house, because it's also a renovation project we bought at auction.
But while we tackle replacing the missing plasterboard on the ceilings in other rooms, we've chosen to only focus on a small space in our living room with less stuff and a minimal Christmas tree as a focal point.
This minimalist approach can be used in many different ways, in rooms of different sizes, and any smaller space, yet can create a huge impact. So here are 10 different ideas for minimalist Christmas decorations!

🎄 Use a Pre-Lit Flocked Artificial Tree
Unlike a real tree that sheds, to reduce mess, we picked a flocked giant tree that we can easily pack away and reuse every single year. Also, many artificial Christmas trees now have fuss-free built-in fairy lights.
However, if you're looking for some cozy Christmas cheer in a tiny home, last year we had a tabletop small tree on our narrowboat to maintain a spacious feel.
Or, you can choose a sparse tree which is perfect for minimalist Christmas decorating ideas. Or opt for a pencil tree, or a space saving minimalist Christmas tree that sits against the wall.
Top Tip: get into the spirit by dressing your tree while listening to Christmas music, or get the family involved for some quality time.
🔔 Choose Minimal Baubles
This year we opted for quality over quantity and chose gold woodland decorations, which are birds and squirrels as if they're sat on a snowy tree branch for a Winter Wonderland feel. They're beautiful things!
We also dressed it with a selection of baubles shaped like pine cones for some natural elements. In a monochrome palette (a single colour with different tones and textures), it's interesting and easy on the eye.
These are carefully positioned and not overcrowded for a minimalist style and a simpler Christmas look. I also avoid glass, so there's less chance of breakages while hanging or as I dust them down again for next year.
Top tip: a minimalist Christmas decor DIY you could do is dehydrate some orange slices and attach them to string for a little pop of colour which can be highlighted with string lights.
🌟 Use a Christmas Tree Topper
One of the main focal points I've always loved during the holiday season is a beautiful tree topper.
If you want a bright interior design feel, a simple idea is to use one made with natural materials. The tree topper we chose was star-shaped with built-in white lights.
It's the perfect way to add a simple wow factor and create a glowing warmth when all of your main lights are off.
Top tip: if you find your tree topper is too heavy and not sitting straight, I recommend watching this quick hack on how to place a tree topper!
🌲 Using a Christmas Tree Skirt
Another easy way to achieve a minimalist theme during the Christmas season is to hide an unsightly tree stand, by covering it up with a faux fur or fuzzy blanket to match your colour scheme.
We chose a wicker-style willow tree skirt in slate grey, but you can also find metal Christmas tree collars, beautifully decorated with a festive look.
For a mini Christmas tree, a simple way is to wrap it with some hessian sack fabric, which blends in with neutral colours.
Top tip: make sure you choose a skirt that is bigger than the diameter of your stand, but not one too large that it becomes a trip hazard.
🕯️ Brighten Your Space with Christmas Candles
Whether on the centre of your dining table, or minimal shelf, this year we chose faux candles with LED lights that we can reuse when it's this time of year without the need for candle holders.
Alternatively, another minimalist holiday yearly tradition you could do is light an advent calendar candle each day leading up to Christmas.
Candles are an ideal holiday decoration if you also have minimal storage space and too much stuff. It's a single-use item like a chocolate advent calendar, so no need to store them away in January each year.
Top Tip: if using a traditional candle, look for a scent that evokes the holiday spirit.
💡 Use Simple Christmas Lights
A great example of a light and airy magical feel is to hang a string of micro-led lights without taking up too much space.
We've installed an outdoor digital curtain light outside of our sliding patio doors which leads to the conservatory. This brings light into the room and is app-controlled with interchangeable sequences and timers.
They don't need to come in strings, either. They could be built within decorations, such as this set of 3 pretty light-up Christmas parcels.
Top tip: you could also place some lights in mason jars and use them as Christmas side table lamps.
🪟 Decorating Door Frames, Doors, and Windows
We all know how popular a simple wreath with faux greenery is for a front door, but what about the doorway or window frame inside?
You can use simple tinsel, but this time, we used existing hooks to drape over this pre-lit gold beaded garland which adds a bit of festive cheer to the room that needs DIY help the most!
Alternatively, you could use some fresh greenery with a real wreath and garland and the smell of fresh pine is so comforting!
🦌 Simple Ornaments
Rather than covering your own home in excessive decorations, think about quality over quantity, meaningful decorations in pride of place can trump uncoordinated glitter.
If you're a renter and worry about making permanent changes and having to ask permission to drill walls for mounting, a great way to keep it simple is some minimal Christmas ornaments.
You can make use of your fireplace mantel, or cubby holes in the wall by grouping smaller types of decorations in pairs, such as these clean-looking white and gold ceramic deers.
As we're not a fan of dusting, we prefer less ornaments, so a handful of what we truly love works well for us.
Top tip: a small selection is great for a simple coffee table vignette or dining room table for when you're entertaining friends or family members.
🎁 Use Neutral Colours
Every Christmas while growing up, I loved decorating the tree. But I was never able to achieve a picture perfect tree. Nor, did I have any decorating or colour-matching skills.
If holiday decorating doesn't come naturally to you, I recommend focusing on a neutral colour palette for a classic look. Also, follow the foolproof house design rule of 3 colours to decorate for a cosy minimalist Christmas.
This is:
- 60% for your main colour
- 30% of your room uses a secondary colour
- 10% of the room is a colour that accentuates the room
Top tip: to avoid your decorations from being too plain, look for objects like baubles, throws, cushions, etc to add more depth.
🧦 Hang Stocking Fillers
Another one of my favourite ways to display minimal Christmas decor is to hang Christmas stockings near the fireplace. There are so many colours and luxury styles to choose from.
Or even buy personalized Christmas stocking stuffers for the whole family. This year I hung two of these grey Gonk stockings with a nail in the mortar of our brickwork.
However, you can use Christmas stocking holders to hook onto flat surfaces or twine onto an old picture hook.
Top Tip: if you don't have a fireplace, you can hang it from windows or coat hooks temporarily.

For minimal Xmas decor, you can choose one room or area like a corner in your home. This can be minimalist Christmas tree decorations, simple ornaments and things you treasure.
Minimal decor practises the concept of less is more; especially by Scandinavians. Less clutter can be elegant, classic, good for your mental health, and create an open, airy space with natural light.
