Fiskars Xact Weed Puller Review

An honest and unbiased Fiskars Xact weed puller review, featuring tips, pros, and cons. Includes a Fiskars weed puller video demonstration of how it works.

Please note, that there are many similar-looking weed pullers on Amazon, but this is the only one I've ever tried, and couldn't compare it to any others.

Recently I watched Proper DIY's Scarifying a lawn video and in part of it, Stuart introduced us to this Fiskars weed puller.

Mother's Day was around the corner and I instantly commented how I thought it looked like the perfect gift for my mother-in-law. She loved gardening, but unfortunately has aches and pains.

After buying her one, I became envious of their stories about how brilliant it was. So I caved in and bought one too. In short, it's ADDICTIVE and I'm not even a keen gardener. But I love landscape gardening projects. Let's explore it!

How the Fiskars Weed Puller Tool Works

I like to joke that you stab, twist, kill*.

1. Find a dandelion in the grass
2. Open the Fiskars 4 prong weed puller by pulling the orange lever towards you
3. Stab the centre of it WHILE pushing it into the ground with the foot pedal
4. Tilt the weed puller backward towards you and pull it out
5. You can keep your foot on the pedal while tilting, but we found it wasn't necessary
6. Then push the orange telescopic lever forward to eject, which feels like reloading a rifle gun**

Disadvantages of the Fiskars Weed Puller

• Very small weeds can slip out of the claws before you get to the bin
• The first time will take ages if you've neglected your lawn, but after that, it's a matter of maintenance
• Leaves holes in the grass that you'll need to press down with your feet or reseed with lawn care
• It's addictive (although will keep you fit and it's fun!)
• Probably not the best use of your time on a farm or smallholding with a lawn of over 1 acre
• 1m in length may be too short for you. I'm 5ft 4" and still found myself hovering slightly. I would have preferred it to be 20cm taller
• Misses sometimes where the lawn is next to gravel boards or paving
• It misses where you have more than 2 weeds in the same area once you've weakened the soil
• If you have knee-tendon or ankle mobility problems and the soil is firm, using the pedal regularly can aggravate them from repetition
• Some Amazon customers have had problems with the plastic components breaking

Is it Better to Use the Weeder After it's Rained?

Yes. We've found that after a rainfall, the ground is soft, making it easier to press in. A firmer ground will require more force using the foot pedal.

Overall Verdict

Firstly, we think this is one of the most satisfying weeding tools we've ever used. In fact, I've only ever weeded on my hands and knees wearing a pair of gloves.

Even if you're not a keen gardener, this weed pulling tool is so much fun. In fact, there was a lot of waiting around to use it while each my husband and I took it in turns.

No Need for Chemicals

It's a great option if you don't want to (or can't) use chemicals if you have pets or chickens, etc. Ideally, we'd buy two (one for each of us), but I'm sure the novelty will wear off eventually.

And as a result, apart from some small craters that we can live with, it has produced a tidier looking lawn.

Also, I can imagine it wouldn't be difficult to delegate weeding the lawn to a partner, friends, children, or grandkids.
